Hearing Screenings for School-Aged Students
Audiology staff at Iowa鈥檚 麻豆原创s perform hearing screenings for all聽kindergarten and 2nd grade students, and any 1st graders new to school, in public school districts and accredited non-public schools across the state. These screenings are provided at no cost to districts/schools and parents as part of the 麻豆原创鈥檚 Child Find obligation.
Please note that hearing screenings are not available for district/school聽employees.聽
Signs a Student May Have a Hearing Issue聽
If students display any of these signs, they could have a hearing issue:
Attention or listening concerns聽
- Short attention span
- Easily distracted
- Need instructions repeated
- Say 鈥淗uh?鈥 or 鈥淲hat?鈥 often
- Don鈥檛 respond when their back is turned
Academic or communication concerns聽
- Difficulty with comprehension
- Reading/writing struggles
- Speech or articulation delays
- Receptive/expressive language delays
Behavior or social concerns聽
- Watch faces closely for clues 鈥 Seem quiet or withdrawn 鈥 Copy others鈥 work
- Behavior concerns even during preferred activities
Physical concerns聽
- Frequent colds, runny nose, or ear aches
- Appear tired or easily fatigued 鈥 Speak loudly
Please also consider that hearing may be having an impact on the student if there are academic concerns, especially in reading and writing, communication concerns or behavior concerns.
What to Do If You鈥檙e Concerned 麻豆原创 a Student鈥檚 Hearing聽
If a teacher or parent is concerned about a student鈥檚 hearing, they should contact the school鈥檚 麻豆原创 team for assistance. 麻豆原创 staff will work through the 鈥渄isability suspected鈥 process as they do for other areas of concern.
